How To Crochet The Spooky Slippers

Made for #Ravellenics2021: Summer of Crafting as a design challenge. Totally enjoyed the process and absolutely thrilled with outcome.

Hope this pattern brings a healthy mix of spooky fun into the minds of people when worn.

Instructions

Gauge information  – size S-M-L

Difficulty level – Beginner

The pattern is written using US crochet stitch terminology. Here hook size 4 mm (US G/6 or UK 8) is used. The tension is 17 dc = 10 cm/4” in width. Finished Size Small-22cm, Medium-24cm, Large-27cm.

To make this you will need following material

  • Worsted weight yarn- Orange colour – 150g to 200g
  • Dk yarn 50g in black colour
  • Hook- 4mm and 3mm
  • Scissors
  • Markers to mark important stitches
  • Yarn needle to weave in the ends
  • White colour thread and embroidery needle

Symbols for reading the pattern instructions–

  • SL ST= Slip stitch
  • ST= Stitch
  • YO= Yarn over
  • CH= chain stitch
  • SC= Single crochet in stitch
  • DC= Double crochet in stitch
  • HDC = Half double crochet
  • Dc2tog= *Yoh and draw up a loop in the next st, yoh and pull through 2 loops on hook*, rep * to * 1 times more. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on the hook.
  • Sc2tog= Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, Yoh and draw through all loops on hook, sc2tog made.

Overview

  • We work in the round without turning back and forth for first half of the length of the slippers.
  • Then work back and forth for the rest of the length.
  • The crochet edge of hdc is worked over the opening space.
  • The eyes, nose and spider is worked seperately and then sewn onto the finished slippers.

Step by step pattern instructions

  • Make a magic ring or ch5 and sl st into first st to form a ring
  • Round 1- ch3(counts as dc), work 11 dc into the ring. Total dc-12
  • Round 2- ch3, 2dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2dc in next*. Repeat *to* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total dc=18
  • Round 3- ch3, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, *dc in next 2 st, 2dc in next*. Repeat *to* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total dc=24
  • Round 4- ch3, dc in next 2 st, 2dc in next st, *dc in next 3 st, 2dc in next*. Repeat *to* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total dc=30
  • Round 5- Work dc in each st expect increase (S-4,M-6,L-10) st evenly in this round. Total st = (34, 36, 40)
  • Round 6- Work dc in each st. Repeat round 6 until piece measures (S-16cm,M-17cm,L-19cm). Cut the yarn and fasten the end.
  • Now place 2 marker at center leaving 6 unworked stitches in between them.
  • Attach yarn at one of the marker stitches, ch3, dc in every st until 2nd marker st, work last dc in the 2nd marker.
  • Turn, Ch1, sl st in next st (1 dc decrease), ch3, dc in every sf until last st remains. Do not work in the last st. Total dc = (26, 28, 32)
  • Turn, ch3, dc in every st. Repeat this row until piece measures (S-21cm,M-23cm,L-26cm).
  • Last row – Turn, ch3, work dc in next (10-11-13) st, *work dc2tog in next st* twice (2 dc decrease), dc in each of next (11-12-14) st till end.
  • Cut a log tail of yarn and sew the slippers edge to edge as shown in the video.

Top edge

  • Round 1- Join yarn at the back, ch2, work hdc st in the entire round of the opening of the slippers. Sl st to join.
  • Round 2- Ch2, hdc in each st till end. Sl st to join.
  • Repeat round 2 two times more. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Eyes (make 4)

  • With black colour yarn, make a magic ring or ch4 and sl st into first st to form a ring
  • Ch3, work 11 dc into the ring. Sl st to join.
  • Ch3, dc in same st, *2dc in next st*. Repeat * to* till end of round. Sl st to join.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Nose

  • With black colour yarn, make a magic ring or ch4 and sl st into first st to form a ring
  • Ch3, work 11 dc into the ring. Sl st to join.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Spider

  • Body- With black colour yarn and 3mm hook, make a magic ring or ch4 and sl st into first st to form a ring
  • Round 1- Ch1, work 4 sc into the ring. Sl st to join.
  • Round 2- Ch1, 2sc in each st in the round. Sl st to join. Total sc-8
  • Round 3- Ch1, 1sc in first st, 2sc in next st, *1sc,2sc* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total sc-12
  • Round 4- Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to join. Total sc-12
  • Round 5- Ch1, 1sc in each next 2 st, 2sc in next st, *1sc in next 2 st ,2sc in next sr* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total sc-16
  • Round 6 to 10- Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to join. Total sc-16
  • Round 11- Ch1, 1sc in each next 2 st, sc2tog in next st, *1sc in next 2 st , sc2tog in next sr* till end of the round. Sl st to join. Total sc-12
  • Round 12- Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to join. Total sc-12
  • Round 13 – Ch 1, *1 sc in next sc, Sc2tog in next st*. Repeat * to * till end if round. sl st to join. Total sc-8.
  • Stuff the body now.
  • Round 14- Ch 1, *Sc2tog. 1 sc in next sc. Repeat * to * till end of round. Sl st to join. Total sc-5
  • Head – Round 15- Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Total sc-10
  • Round 16- Ch 1, sc in each sc around except increase 2 sc evenly in this round. Total sc-12
  • Round 17 to 19 – Ch 1. 1 sc in each st in this round. Sl at to join. Total sc-12
  • Round 20- Ch 1, *1 sc in next st, Sc2tog*. Repeat * to * till end of the round. Sl st to join.Total sc-8
  • Stuff the head now.
  • Round 21 – Ch 1, *Sc2tog* total 4 times. Sl st to join.Total sc-4.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Legs

  • Ch 15, cut the yarn. (Make 4)
  • Ch 20, cut the yarn. (Make 4)

Finishing

  • Sew all the skeleton eyes and nose as shown in the video.
  • Sew the spider and her legs as shown below. Shorter four legs in front and longer ones behind.
  • Sew a pair of white eyes on the spiders head.

Your pair of spooky slippers are now ready to be worn and flaunted!!
