How To Crochet Granny Square Crop Top – Shundorban Blouse

The blouse pattern is named after the The Sundarbans (Bengali – Shundorbôn, which means – Beautiful forest.

The formations on the blouse are similar to the formations created by mangroves in the delta area formed by the confluence of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal.

There is nothing easier or better than a granny square!! It’s a beginners first project and a solid base to build on larger items.

It’s such a versatile unit that can be used to make things varying from coasters to cardigans; from headbands to hand towels; and of course blouses to blankets!! And what not!!!

If you are a regular on my blog, you will know my obsession with crochet saree blouses!! Whenever I pick up that hook and some lovely yarn from my stash, it’s always a design for next blouse on my mind.

I will have to admit, at this point of time there are multiple designs in my mind, about 5 in WIP and 1 finished item. But I need to get on to write the pattern for the finished one. Also testing the pattern and the calculations thereof does take a lot of time too..

It’s the ideation and creative process that I love the most!! And this time I bring to you the most easiest way to make a crop top a.k.a a saree blouse!! No increase or decrease stitches required! No long beginning chains! Just a bunch of granny squares joined together, add some spicy edging to it and Done!!! Our very own no fuss blouse is ready!!

Assembly of squares

  1. Place the squares edge by edge and sew them together in the sequence shown in the image above.
  2. This design is highly adaptable. And one can make this true to their unique size. Keep on joining squares approximately for the length around chest and stop once it comfortably wraps around the chest.
  3. For length, keep on adding as many rows as you wish.
  4. Please refer to the video tutorial on the technique i used to join the squares.

  • Turn, REP *skip 3 DC ST on the straps, 7 TR in 4th ST, skip 3 DC ST, SC in next ST* till end of the row over shoulder straps.

  • Repeat the same on other side as well.
