How To Crochet Granny Square Top – Ms Summers Crop Top

Like me, if you are a fan of cute ruffled crop tops then this one is for you. The OG granny square with ruffled sleeves; it doesn’t get better than that!! On top of it, this is a size inclusive pattern from sizes XS to 5XL.

Whats more this top comes in two version- slevesless and with sleeves.

I have used 100% cotton yarn from Vardhaman called Cotton Crush yarn for making this top. I made it using three different colours. This DK weight yarn works up quickly and gives a nice smooth finish. The texture is oh so soft and it’s cool on the eyes too.

Here is the Youtube link to the beginner friendly video tutorial for both versions of the top.

This is an adult size M-L pattern. The top measures appx. 96-104 cm Or 37 3/4″ – 41″ wide chest measurement.

To make this top you will need following material

  • DK weight yarn- 3 shades, 100g each; here Vardhman Cotton Crush Yarn is used.
  • Hook- 4mm (G)
  • Scissors
  • Markers to mark important stitches
  • Yarn needle to weave in the ends

  • SL ST= Slip stitch
  • ST= Stitch
  • YO= Yarn over
  • CH= chain stitch
  • SP= Space
  • SC= Single crochet in stitch
  • DC= Double crochet in stitch

  • BEG = Beginning

  • Yarn colour = Shade A – white, shade B – pink, shade C – blue

Let’s start by making the granny squares.

Step by step pattern instructions

  • Round 1–  with shade A,  Ch 4 and form a circle with sl st in 1st CH ST. CH 3, 2 DC into the circle, REP **CH 2, 3 DC into the circle** 3 times in total. CH 2, SL ST into the 3rd CH ST made at BEG. Cut the yarn. Total stitches at the end of 1st round- 12 DC + 8 CH.
  • Round 2 –  Join shade B at any CH 2 SP. CH 3, [2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in same CH 2 SP. REP **[3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in next CH 2 SP**, 3 times total. SL ST in the 3rd CH ST. Cut the yarn. Total stitches – 24 DC + 8 CH.
  • Round 3 – Join shade C at any CH 2 SP. CH 3, [2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in same CH 2 SP. Skip 3 DC, [CH 1, 3 DC, CH 1] in CL SP. REP **[3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in next CH 2 SP. Skip 3 DC, [CH 1, 3 DC, CH 1] in CL SP** total 3 times. CH 1, SL ST in the 3rd CH ST. Cut the yarn. Total count of stitches – 36 DC + 16 CH.
  • Work remaining squares in the same pattern

How to assemble the squares

  • Refer to the video tutorial.
  • Lay the squares side by side. With shade C & yarn needle, join the yarn at the 1st ST of the corner 2 CH SP with SL ST.
  • Join with whip ST method– Insert hook through bottom loop of corner CH on first square and then through bottom loop of same corner ST on the second square.
  • **Again insert hook through bottom loop of the next ST on first square and then through bottom loop of the next ST on the second square.** REP ** to** till you reach the 1st ST on the corner 2 CH SP. CH1 and pull the yarn. Cut the yarn.
  • Stitch the squares together until all the squares are joined.
  • Join the sides of first column and last column of stitched squares such that they all form a circular tube.

Edging over neckline

  • With shade C, join yarn at any CH 2 SP, SC in each ST, that is each DC and CH 1 SP except in the joining between the squares. SL ST in the first SC, cut the yarn

Straps

  • Wear the tube structure of the top and place markers at the front and back places where the straps should be. These are usually the stitches over the bra straps.
  • Attach yarn C at any of the front marker places. Chain required number of chain stitches. For my measurements I made 43 chain stitches. SL ST in the marker stitch at the back. Repeat the same on the other side for straps.
  • Turn, SL ST in next 2 stitches on the armholes side, CH1, DC in each CH ST on the straps till the end of the row. Skip 2 ST, SL ST in the next ST. Repeat the same on other side.

Ruffle edging on the neckline with ties

  • CH 250 for the ties.
  • Select the stitch exactly in the centre on the front neckline. Attach yarn C at that stitch. Now placing the chain just made behind your work, make 3 DC in the first ST itself.
  • Work 3 DC in each ST while working over the Chain simultaneously, around the entire neckline.
  • Make sure the ends of the ties are out so that you can cinch them to adjust the fitting on the neckline.

Edging on the bottom of the top

  • With shade C, join yarn at any CH 2 SP, SC in each ST and CH 1 SP except in the joining between the squares. SL ST in the first SC.
  • CH 1, **skip 3 ST, 3 DC in 4th ST, CH3, SL ST in the 1st CH ST (picot), again 3 DC in same ST, skip 3 ST SC in 4th ST**. REP**to** around the entire length of the bottom.

Your top is now complete. Enjoy and have fun flaunting !

With this the sleeveless version of the top is complete

Sleeves

  • Row 1 – With yarn B, CH 20. DC in 4th ST, DC in each ST. Total ST – 18
  • Row 2 – 2 DC in 1st ST, DC in each ST except last ST, 2 DC in last ST. Total ST – 20

  • Row 10 – DC in each ST without any increase. Total ST – 44.
  • Row 11 – 2 DC in first ST, DC in each ST except last ST, 2 DC in last ST. Total ST – 46.
  • Row 12 – DC in each ST without any increase. Total ST – 46.
  • Row 13 – CH 8, join the end of the chain to the other end of the row. Turn, DC in 1st CH, DC in each of the next 7 CH ST, 1 DC in rest of the ST until the end of the round. Total ST – 54.
  • Work 12 small squares following instructions for two rounds only using yarn B and CC
  • Join the squares on the sides to each other, 6 squares for each sleeves so that it makes a tube structure.
  • Attach the squares to the last round of the sleeves worked.
  • Work next two rounds with SC in each ST.
