Bag-o-heart

Numerous times it happens that once we are hooked on crocheting we simply cant get enough of the beautiful shades and variants of yarns available in the market. Anything that catches eye and gets our heart racing goes directly into shopping cart.

I cant remember how many times i have bought huge stock of yarn and then sat wondering which projects to do with what.

Soon enough i am left with these small quantities of yarns of different colours. And what better way to make use of this bunch of beauties than to work them into accessories.

So lets get started with bag-o-heart project.

Material needed

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

This bag is made my stitching together 15 granny squares. Let’s start by making the granny square which we will replicate fourteen times over.

The yarn used here is 4ply yarn which requires 4mm hook to be worked with.

Symbol explaination (US terminology)

  • sl st- slip stitch

Step 1- Ch 4 and form a magic ring with a sl st in the first chain space.

Step 2- Ch 5. *Make three dc in the ring and ch 2*. Repeat *to* two more times. Then make another two dc in the ring space and join the last dc with a sl st to the third chain .
Total stitches at the end of 1st round- 12

Step 3- Ch 3. * 2 dc in the first corner from the hook, ch 2, make another 2 dc in the same corner space.  work dc in the next three stitches*
Repeat * to *two more times. Then make dc in the last two stitches.

Step 4- Ch 3. dc in the next two stitches. *2dc in the corner chain space,  ch 2 another 2 dc in the same corner space. dc in the next seven stitches*

Step 5- Ch 3. dc in the next four stitches *2dc in the corner chain space,  ch 2 another 2 dc in the same corner space. dc in the next eleven stitches*
Repeat * to *two more times. Then make dc in the last six stitches.
Sl st in the 3rd chain up. Total count of stitches – 60
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Shoulder straps

We will be making a single strap of about 150cm.

Ch 3 and form a magic ring with sl st in the first chain space. Ch 1 and make sc in the next three stitches. Now, do not  join the first and last stitch with sl st. Instead continue making sc in the round till you acheive a desired length for the strap. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

Assembly

Step 1- Arrange the granny squares in the fashion as shown in the picture. Sew them along the edges joning each other.

Step 2- After joining them all together fold them in the fashion shown in the picture and sew them together like so to complete the body of the bag.

Step 3- Insert the strap through all the four places where markers are placed and sew the ends together.

Step 4- Sew the last granny square to the inside of the bag to make a small pocket like in the picture.

Your bag is now complete. Enjoy and have fun crocheting !
