How To Crochet Granny Square Hat – Summers Bucket Hat

This granny square bucket hat pattern is a quick and easy project that is made by using cotton yarn in multiple colours.

Whats more this hat takes less than a day to finish too.

Yarn which is used for making this hat is 100% cotton yarn from Vardhaman called Cotton Crush yarn. I made it using three different colours. This DK weight yarn works up quickly and gives a nice smooth finish. The texture is so soft and it’s cool on the eyes too.

Overview

  • First we work six squares separately
  • Then we join all the squares on sides, stitch by stitch, such that it makes a ring.
  • Next we work the hat crown on top of the granny squares just joined.
  • And finally we work the hat brim on the bottom side of the squares.

Let’s start by making the granny square which we will replicate five times more.

Gauge information  

Difficulty level – Advanced beginner

The pattern is written using US crochet stitch terminology. Here hook size 4 mm (G) . The tension is 20 single crochet x 20 rows = 10 cm/4” in width and 10 cm/4” height. The finished square measures 8cm/3″ * 8cm/3″.

Hat measurements

This is an adult size hat pattern. Single size fits most. The hat measures appx. 21cm/8″ in height and 64cm/25″ in circumference.

To make this hat you will need following material

  • DK weight yarn- 3 shades, 50g each; here Vardhman Cotton Crush Yarn is used.
  • Hook- 4mm (G)
  • Scissors
  • Markers to mark important stitches
  • Yarn needle to weave in the ends

  • SL ST= Slip stitch
  • ST= Stitch

  • SC= Single crochet in stitch

  • CL SP = Cluster space – space between two (3DC) clusters
  • SC2TOG = Insert hook in stitch and draw up a loop, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Yarn colour = Shade A – white, shade B – pink, shade C – blue

Step by step pattern instructions

  • Round 1–  with shade A,  Ch 4 and form a circle with sl st in 1st CH ST. CH 3, 2 DC into the circle, REP **CH 2, 3 DC into the circle** 3 times in total. CH 2, SL ST into the 3rd CH ST made at BEG. Cut the yarn. Total stitches at the end of 1st round- 12 DC + 8 CH.
  • Round 2 –  Join shade B at any CH 2 SP. CH 3, [2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in same CH 2 SP. REP **[3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in next CH 2 SP**, 3 times total. SL ST in the 3rd CH ST. Cut the yarn. Total stitches – 24 DC + 8 CH.
  • Round 3 – Join shade C at any CH 2 SP. CH 3, [2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in same CH 2 SP. Skip 3 DC, [CH 1, 3 DC, CH 1] in CL SP. REP **[3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC] in next CH 2 SP. Skip 3 DC, [CH 1, 3 DC, CH 1] in CL SP** total 3 times. CH 1, SL ST in the 3rd CH ST. Cut the yarn. Total count of stitches – 36 DC + 16 CH.
  • Work 5 more square in the same pattern

How to assemble the squares

  • Refer to the video tutorial. Lay the squares side by side. With shade C & yarn needle, work through bottom loops and join with slip stitch.
  • Stitch the squares together until all 6 squares are joined.
  • Join the sides of first and last square such that they all form a circle.

Hat crown

  • Round 1 – With shade B, join yarn at any CH 2 SP, SC in each ST, that is each DC and CH 1 SP and in the joining between the squares. Total SC- 84
  • Decrease 6 ST in each round henceforth until there are only 6 ST remaining on the 14th round.
  • Round 2 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 12 ST, SC2TOG in 13th &14th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 78.
  • Round 3 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 11 ST, SC2TOG in 12th &13th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 72.
  • Round 4 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 10 ST, SC2TOG in 11th &12th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 66.
  • Round 5 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 9 ST, SC2TOG in 10th &11th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 60.
  • Round 6 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 8 ST, SC2TOG in 9th &10th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 54.
  • Round 7 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 7 ST, SC2TOG in 8th &9th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 48.
  • Round 8 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 6 ST, SC2TOG in 7th &8th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 42
  • Round 9 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 5 ST, SC2TOG in 6th &7th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 36.
  • Round 10 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 4 ST, SC2TOG in 5th &6th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 30.
  • Round 11 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 3 ST, SC2TOG in 4th &5th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 24.
  • Round 12 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 2 ST, SC2TOG in 3rd &4th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 18.
  • Round 13 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 1 ST, SC2TOG IN 2nd & 3rd ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 12.
  • Round 14 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC2TOG in 1st & 2nd ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 6
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Hat brim

  • Round 1 – With shade B, join yarn at any CH 2 SP, SC in each ST, that is each DC and CH 1 SP and in the joining between the squares. Total SC- 84
  • Increase 6 ST in each round henceforth until the 12th round.
  • Round 2 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 13 ST, 2 SC in 14th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 90.
  • Round 3 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 14 ST, 2 SC in 15th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 96.
  • Round 4 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 15 ST, 2 SC in 16th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 102.
  • Round 5 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 16 ST, 2 SC in 17th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 108.
  • Round 6 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 17 ST, 2 SC in 18th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 114.
  • Round 7 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 18 ST, 2 SC in 19th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 120.
  • Round 8 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 19 ST, 2 SC in 20th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 126.
  • Round 9 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 20 ST, 2 SC in 21th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 132.
  • Round 10 – Do not turn. CH 1, REP **SC in first/next 21 ST, 2 SC in 22th ST** till the end of the round, total 6 times. Total SC – 138.
  • Round 11 & 12 – Work next two rows without any increase. CH 1, SC in 1st ST, SC in each ST till end of the round. Total SC – 138.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
