How To Crochet The Skyline Granny Square

Hello fellow crafters! Here is my brand new pattern for a granny square. Totally obsessed with the versatile granny squares right now! I designed this one in order to use it for desk organizer.

The below instructions include written as well as photo tutorial for skyline granny square and how to join them to make the desk organizer.

Instructions

Gauge information-

Difficulty level – Easy – Intermediate

The pattern is written using US crochet stitch terminology. You can use yarn of your choice with its recommended hook size. Here hook size 3 mm (US D/3 or UK 11) is used. Make a swatch in order to confirm the right fit by making 25 double crochets x 10 rows = 10 cm/4” in width and 10 cm/4” height. The size of one square is 12 * 12 cm or 4.5 * 4.5 inch.

To make this crop top you will need following material

  1. Cotton 4ply fingering weight yarn 20g each color – 4 colors – color change is indicted in pattern. Total 80g     
  2. Hook- 3mm
  3. Scissors
  4. Markers to mark important stitches
  5. Yarn needle to weave in the ends

Symbols for reading the pattern instructions–

  • SL ST- Slip stitch
  • ST- Stitch
  • YO = Yarn over
  • CH= chain stitch
  • CH-SP = Chain space
  • SC= single crochet in stitch
  • DC= double crochet in stitch
  • TR = Treble crochet Or (double treble crochet in UK terms)
  • Colours: A – Butter; B – Peach; C – Rose; D – Mehendi Green

Step by step pattern instructions

• This granny square pattern is a no turn pattern. With yarn A, CH4, SL ST to join into the first CH to form a ring.

  • Step 1- CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); 2 DC into ring; 1 TR into the ring followed by 3 DC into ring; CH 3, *3 DC into ring, CH 3*. Repeat * to * one more time. SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH made at the beginning.
  • Step 2- CH 3; DC into next 2 ST; (2 DC, 1 TR, 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 3 DC; (2 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; ( 3 DC, CH2, 3 DC) into next corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; ( 3 DC, 2 CH, 1 DC;] into last corner 2 CH-SP; (Invisible colour change = YO and insert hook into the 2 CH-SP,YO and pull through, there are 3 loops on the hook, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, change to Yarn B, YO again with Yarn B and pull through remaining 2 loops). SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • This step onwards the bifurcation into two different designs into the same square starts.
  • Step 3- CH 3; DC into next 4 ST; (2 DC; 1 TR; 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 7 DC until next corner; (2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC) into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1; (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into next corner 2CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1; (3 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into last corner 2CH-SP; DC into last 2 ST; SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Step 4- CH 3; DC into next 6 ST; (2 DC; 1 TR; 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 11 DC until next corner; (2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC) into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; *3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1* repeat * to * one time; (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into next corner 2CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1, repeat * to * one time; (3 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC) into last corner 2CH-SP; DC into last 4 ST; SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Step 5- With Yarn C, CH 3; DC into next 8 ST; (2 DC; 1 TR; 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 15 DC until next corner; (2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC) into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; *3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1* repeat * to * two times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into next corner 2CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1, repeat * to * two times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC) into last corner 2CH-SP; DC into last 6 ST; SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Step 6- CH 3; DC into next 10 ST; (2 DC; 1 TR; 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 19 DC until next corner; (2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC) into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; *3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1* repeat * to * three times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into next corner 2CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1, repeat * to * three times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC) into last corner 2CH-SP; DC into last 8 ST; SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Step 7- With Yarn D, CH 3; DC into next 12 ST; (2 DC; 1 TR; 2 DC) into corner TR ST; DC into next 23 DC until next corner; (2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC) into corner 2 CH-SP; CH 1; *3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1* repeat * to * four times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC] into next corner 2CH-SP; CH 1; 3 DC into 1 CH-SP; CH 1, repeat * to * four times; (3 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC) into last corner 2CH-SP; DC into last 10 ST; SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Step 8- CH 1; *SC in each ST until corner; 2 SC in the corner ST*, repeat * to * till last corner; SC in each ST; SL ST into 1st CH.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Yarn organizer

Now, let’s make a stash buster for our never ending stash of yarn. This yarn organizer is made by joining together six granny squares.

  • Join the squares as shown in the pictures below. The piece is shaped as a square. It has four sides and one base.
  • Image 1- one of the squares here work as the base and other two are sides of the organizer.
  • Image 2- Join the last two as shown in picture. These will work as the other two sides of the square organizer. Sew them to the first pair.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Your stash buster is ready!!
