How To Crochet Pretty Petals Halter Top

This summer feel delicate as a petal and fabulous like a blooming flower with this halter top. Absolutely a bliss for a beginner. Sit back, relax, get sipping those cool drinks and hook up with a favorite yarn from the stash.

The pattern uses 100% cotton 3ply fingering weight yarn and 2.5mm hook. Like all my yarn this was also bought online from PES. I am not affiliated to them or any other brand but I love their shop and they deserve a mention.

Instructions

Gauge information- Size: S-M-L-XL-XXL-XXXL

Hook size 2.5 mm/C (UK 11). Make a swatch in order to confirm the right fit by making 23 double crochets x 13 rows = 10 cm / 4” in width and 10 cm / 4” height. The halter top will be worked top down, back and forth in one piece.

To make this crop top you will need following material

  1. Cotton 3ply fingering yarn 150-150-150-150-200-200g        
  2. Hook- 2.5mm and 3mm
  3. Scissors
  4. Markers to mark important stitches
  5. Yarn needle to weave in the ends
  6. Buttons- 1cm in size

  1. Ch sp – chain space
  2. Ch st – chain stitch
  3. Sc – single crochet in stitch
  4. Dc – double crochet in stitch
  5. Yoh – yarn over hook
  6. Dc4tog – (Yoh, insert the hook into st and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook) total 4 times. You have 4 loops on the         hook. Yoh and draw through all 4 loops on hook, dc4tog made. Elaborated with pictures below.

Step by step pattern instructions S-M-L-XL-XXL-XXXL

  • Ch 50-50-50-58-58-58.
  • Row 1- Turn (right side) – Work 1 dc in the 4th chain from the hook. Now work dc in each chain. Total dc 48-48-48-56-56-56.
  • Row 2- (Increase one dc on each sides of next 4 rows). Turn,ch3, dc in same st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 22-22-22-26-26-26 times more. Ch1, dc in last st.
  • Row 3 – Turn,ch3, dc in same st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 23-23-23-27-27-27 times more. Ch1, dc in last st.
  • Row 4 – Turn,ch3, dc in same st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 24-24-24-28-28-28 times more. Ch1, dc in last st.
  • Row 5 – Turn,ch3, dc in same st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 25-25-25-29-29-29 times more. Ch1, dc in last st.
  • Row 6- (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Bottom 4 petals – Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**, repeat * to ** once more. Ch3,   ((* Yoh, insert the hook into the top of last dc st worked and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook**, repeat * to ** two times more. You have 4 loops on the hook. Again * Yoh, insert the hook into the next dc of previous row and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook**, repeat * to ** three times more. You have 8 loops on the hook. Again * Yoh, skip nearest dc, insert the hook into the next dc of previous row and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook**, repeat * to ** three times more. You have 12 loops on the hook. Now Yoh and draw through all 12 loops on the hook. Ch1, 3 petals made. Ch3, * Yoh, insert the hook into the ch sp on top of the 3 petals made and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook**, repeat * to ** two times more. You have 4 loops on the hook. Now Yoh and draw through all 4 loops on the hook. Bottom 4 petals complete.1dc in the next dc of previous row. ))).Repeat from (( to ))) 5-5-5-6-6-6 times more.   • Row 7 – (Increase one dc on each sides of next 5 rows). Top 2 petals – Turn,ch3, 1dc in the same st, dc in next st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**, * to ** once more. ch1, (( * Yoh, insert the hook into the top of bottom 4 petals made (middle round) and draw up a loop, Yoh and draw through 2 loops on the hook**, repeat * to ** three times more. You have 4 loops on the hook. Yoh and draw through all 4 loops on hook. First dc4tog cluster made. Ch3, repeat * to ** four times. You have 4 loops on the hook. Yoh and draw through all 4 loops on hook. Second dc4tog cluster made. Top 2 petals complete. Ch1, dc in the next dc st of previous row. ))). Repeat from (( to ))) 5-5-5-6-6-6 times more. * Ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st **, repeat * to ** once more. 1dc in next st, 2dc in last st.
  • Row 8 – Turn, ch4, dc in next st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** two times more. * Ch1, skip next ch st, dc on top of the nearest dc4tog cluster, ch1, skip next ch sp, dc in the middle of ch3 space, ch1, skip next ch st, dc on top of the next dc4tog cluster, ch1, skip next ch st, dc in the next dc st of previous row. **, repeat * to ** 5-5-5-6-6-6 times more. * Ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st **, repeat * to ** once more, ch1, 2dc in last st.
  • Row 9 – Turn, ch4, dc in next st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 29-29-29-33-33-33 times more. Ch1, 2dc in last st.
  • Row 10 – Turn, ch4, dc in next st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 30-30-30-34-34-34 times more. Ch1, 2dc in last st.
  • Row 11 – Turn, ch4, dc in next st, *ch1, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** 31-31-31-35-35-35 times more. Ch1, 2dc in last st.
  • Row 12 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st, dc in the next ch st**. Repeat * to ** 33-33-33-37-37-37 times more, 3dc in last st.
  • Row 13 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 76-76-76-84-84-84
  • Row 14 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 3dc in last st. Total dc – 80-80-80-88-88-88
  • Row 15 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 82-82-82-90-90-90

  • Row 18 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 3dc in last st. Total dc – 92-92-92-100-100-100. Stop increase for size (S)small. Proceed only for M-L-XL-XXL-XXXL.
  • Row 19 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 94-94-102-102-102
  • Row 20 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 3dc in last st. Total dc – 98-98-106-106-106
  • Row 21 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 100-100-108-108-108. Stop increase for size (M )medium. Proceed only for L-XL-XXL-XXXL.
  • Row 22 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 3dc in last st. Total dc – 104-112-112-112. Stop increase for size (L) large. Proceed only for XL-XXL-XXXL.
  • Row 23 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 114-114-114. Stop increase for size (XL) xtra-large. Proceed only for XXL-XXXL.
  • Row 24 – (Increase two dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 2 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 3dc in last st. Total dc – 118-118. Stop increase for size XXL. Proceed only for XXXL.
  • Row 25 – (Increase one dc on each sides of this rows). Turn, ch3, 1 dc in the same st, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till second to last st, 2dc in last st. Total dc – 120. Stop increase for size XXXL.
  • After completion of increase for each size there are now total dc – 92-100-104-114-118-120. Top half of the halter top is complete. We will now add chain stitches on both sides of the row.
  • Keep the yarn attached to the working row. With separate yarn ch 46-50-52-57-59-60 and attach to the opposite side. Cut the yarn. From the working side continue working ch 48-52-54-59-61-62. Turn, dc in the 4th ch from hook, work 1dc in each st till the end of row including the ch attached on other side.
  • Total dc- 184-200-208-228-236-240.
  • Turn, ch3, *dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till end of the row. Total dc- 184-200-208-228-236-240.
  • Repeat above step, 15-16-17-19-19-20 times more.
  • **if you seek to increase the length of halter top, you can increase the number of rows here to desired length before working the next two steps.
  • Turn, *ch4, skip 1 st, dc in next st**. Repeat * to ** till end of the row.
  • Turn, ch3, *dc in ch sp, dc in next dc st**. Repeat * to ** till end of the row.  Total dc- 184-200-208-228-236-240.
  • Total number of rows for each size at the end of pattern- 36-40-42-45-46-48. Don’t cut the yarn yet.

Edging for the top

  • Place the front side of the piece outward facing you. With the working yarn still attached, ch1, sc in same st. Sc in every st end to end in the entire length. Sl st to join. Do not cut the yarn.

Petals

  • Ch7, sc in 2nd ch, hdc in next 2 ch st, dc in next 2 ch st, 6dc in last st
  • Turn to next side of ch, dc in next 2 ch st, hdc in next 2 ch st, ch1, skip next st, sl st in the last st.
  • Make four petals to tie to the straps.

Back fastening (option 1- buttons)

  • We will add 3 rows of sc on back panel for fastening with buttons.
  • Side 1(with buttons) – On the back panel with the working yarn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till the end.
  • Turn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till end.
  • Again, turn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till end. Cut the yarn and fasten off the ends.
  • Side 2(with button eye-holes)- Now on the other side, join yarn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till the end.
  • Make eye-holes for buttons. Place markers at places where buttons will go. Turn, begin with sc in each st till first eye-hole, *ch3, skip 3 st, sc in each st till next eye-hole**, repeat * to ** till the last eye-hole. End with sc in remaining st.
  • Again, turn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in next st. *3sc around ch3 st, sc in next 5 sc**. Repeat * to ** two times more. 3sc around ch3 st, sc in last 2 st. Cut the yarn and fasten off the ends.
  • Attach buttons – Corresponding to the button eye-holes made, place marker on the opposite side.
  • With needle and thread sew in the buttons.

Back fastening (Option 2-noodle straps)

  • Take two strands of yarn. With 3mm hook, ch 220. Cut the yarn.
  • This should be about 120cm.
  • We will add 2 rows of sc on back panel for fastening with noodle straps.
  • On the back panel with the working yarn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till the end.
  • Turn, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st till end.
  • Put the straps as shown in the picture.
  • Attach petals at the ends of the straps.

Shoulder straps

  • Take two strands of yarn. With 3mm hook, ch 220. Cut the yarn. Make two, one for each side.
  • This should be about 120cm or make to your desired length.
  • Put one end of the strap through end stitch of first row and other end through back panel.
  • Attach petals at both ends of the straps.
