How To Crochet A Basic black Crop Top

If you are looking for a project that is simple to make, easy to follow, looks stunning when you wear it and works up in a day !! (what !!!!….yes!!!), then this is the one for you!

This crop top is made using the ol simple double crochets all the way. It has princess neck pattern and when tied at the back gives you that perfect fit too. Follow the pattern description with pictures at every step.

I am wearing it on a saree here.

The yarn I have used here is Ganga knitting yarn JIVE. This beautiful soft 8ply black coloured yarn is sprinkled with mini pom-poms and thin spiral colourful thread wrapped across its length. You can buy this yarn online from Pradhan Embroidery Stores

Gauge information-

Size: S/M
Hook size 4 mm / (US G/6 or UK 8). Make a swatch in order to confirm the right fit by making 15 double crochets x 10 rows = 10 cm / 4” in width and 10 cm / 4” height.


To make this crop top / blouse you will need following material–

  1. Yarn- Ganga acrowools knitting yarn JIVE, 150 g in shade no. 779009
  2. Hook- 4mm
  3. Scissors
  4. markers
  5. Yarn needle

Symbols for reading the pattern instructions–

Ch= chain stitch
Sc= single crochet in stitch
Dc= double crochet in stitch
Dc2tog= double crochet two together
Sl= slip stitch

Step by step pattern instructions

1. Ch 59 including ch2 as 1st dc

2. Row 1– Turn your work, dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, dc in the next 2 ch space. *skip 1 ch, dc in next 5 ch space*. Repeat *to* 7 times over, skip 1 ch, dc in the last 4 ch space. Total dc at the end of the row=48

Step no 2

3. Row 2- Turn your work. Ch2, now dc in every dc from the first row. Total dc=48.

Step no 3

4. Insert two markers in the following places. Insert first marker on the 10th dc and second marker on the 39th dc from the right. We will be increasing 2dc every time we cross these markers.(increase one dc on each side of the marker).


5. Row 3- Now ch2, dc in every dc from previous row. Except when you reach st no. 10,11,39th and 40th make 2dc in each of these stitches. Thereby increasing 4dc at the end of this row. Total dc= 52.

Step no 5

6. Row 4-10 – Now repeat step 5 for next seven rounds. *dc in every dc, increase 2dc on both sides of the markers*. Hence increasing 4dc at the end of each row. On the last round total number of dc= 80

Step no 6

7. Now place markers on the 40th and 41st stitch space. We will be decreasing one dc each time me cross these markers. Hence, decreasing 2dc in each round. (We will not be increasing any dc from this step forward).

Step no 7

8. Row 11- Now work dc in every dc except when you reach stitch no 39th & 40th crochet them into 2dctog. Follow the same with stitch no. 41st & 42nd. Thereby decreasing two dc at the end of the round. Total dc= 78.

How to decrease one double crochet.

-Yarn over, insert hook in the next stitch, get the yarn, yarn over and pull yarn through the first two loops on hook ,again yarn over, insert hook in the adjoining stitch, get the yarn, yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining three loops.

Step no 8

9. Row 11-18 – Now follow step no.8. *dc in every dc, dc2tog around each marker*. Total dc at the end of 18th row- 64.

Step no 9

10. Insert markers on 11th and 17th, 46th and 52nd stitch from the right. We will be attaching the shoulder straps between these two pair of markers. (7 dc between each pair). With this we finish the front piece.

Step no 10

12. Back piece – (make two of these) Now ch 21. dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in every chain space. Total dc at the end of the row=20. Turn your work. *Ch2, dc in every dc*. Repeat *to* for next 16 rounds. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

Step no 12

13. Back piece no 1- With the right side facing you, join the yarn and work dc in the first 7 dc spaces, *turn your work ch2, dc in the next 6 dc space*. Repeat *to* for next 22 rounds. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

14.  Back piece no 2- With the right side facing you, join the yarn and work dc in the last 7 dc spaces, *turn your work ch2, dc in the next 6 dc space*. Repeat *to* for next 22 rounds. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

15. Attach the three pieces together in the fashion as shown in the picture.

16. Attach the shoulder straps.

17. Now ch 27. Make another ch 27 too. Keep ample yarn at the beginning and end of the chains. Attach these chains at the 13th and 25th row from the bottom on the left back piece and join them with a sl st to the right back piece.

18. Make a pair of ch 50 and join them seperately on the right and left side back piece. You can also attach tassels at the end of both threads. Tie it and get a perfect fit of your blouse/crop top.
